Playwright Jeremy O. Harris Takes Vogue Inside the Tony Awards

Playwright Jeremy O. Harris still has trouble crediting all of his success — even though his Play Slave was nominated for best play at the Tony Awards Sunday night. “I wrote this play to perform in the basement for my friends,” Harris said. “My wish for this play is for it to be shown in small experimental theaters. To see this play grow to the point where I get emails from people in Tokyo about it is upsetting.”

He just happened to capture all the excitement at Tonys for Vogue through his artful polaroids, from the award ceremony preparations and the after party. However, events are more than just cute photography activities. It was an opportunity to celebrate and reconnect with his colleagues in the theater. “In the year since our industry went down,” says Harris, “I have stayed up all night worrying about the people I know whose lives depend on it. “They chose to be part of an industry that doesn’t pay well, but generates energy for everyone working in that industry. The theater of coming back and coming back healthy means that those people can come back with more energy and food, because they will be working now. ”

As for the affair, Harris knew he had to look gorgeous – after all, the Tonys are all good looking people. To do so, Harris donned a custom couture piece by Schiaparelli, designed by Daniel Roseberry. The duo actually started talking about the design in early 2020. “I was in Paris last year, the day before the Tony nominees were announced, and then Daniel asked me if he could design. not my costume designer,” Harris said. “Who can say no to that?” Roseberry, Harris and stylist Mel Ottenberg jointly designed a sleek, custom-made black suit, outfitted with a golden opera mask. “We always knew we wanted to test my silhouette, but it was barely noticeable,” says Harris. “I’m pretty tall and skinny, and this outfit makes me look 6ft 9 with a 24 inch waist. The outfit looks like you’re dreaming – the same way I feel I’m experiencing my life right now like a dream. ”

Around his neck, Harris wears an ear-shaped pendant necklace – a distinctive nod to his own game. “The last line of my play is, ‘thank you, honey. Thank you for listening,” Harris said. “It is the most important sentiment in the work, and the interpretation of that idea is both subtle and grand. That’s how I hope my work will be successful. Next, Harris is currently adapting The Vanishing Half for HBO, writing a new play (about his friendship with Adrienne Kennedy) and making a movie inspired by Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening.
