This Sunday marks the 73rd Annual Emmy Awards, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. (For all of the evening’s nominations, read here.) Ahead of the big night of television, and in honor of the red carpet that comes before it, Vogue is looking back at some of the most memorable fashions. best to hit the step and repeat the past 15 years. We’ve seen red carpet style run in a wide range of colors, from bold trends to classic Hollywood glamour. Here’s a look back at the dresses that made an impact at the awards.

Although not nominated, Blake Lively still attracted attention in 2009 in Versace’s low neck and high slit dress. Also leading the way with more and more looks around that time was Heidi Klum in a John Galliano for Christian Dior Couture gown that recalled Rita Hayworth’s smoldering elegance. With golden waves on the beach and fancy Chanel dresses, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston also brought a romantic atmosphere to the big night.

On the other end of the spectrum, Mischa Barton, Keri Russell and Kerry Washington were all dazzled in head-to-toe sequins. Julianne Moore in Christian Dior Couture and Claire Danes in Lanvin have shown that bold colors can be an attractive choice — ditto for Allison Williams in Oscar de la Renta and Katie Holmes in Calvin Klein Collection. A favorite from the 2013 Emmys was Kiernan Shipka, who wore a sophisticated Delpozo dress that wasn’t stuffy.

The following year, Gwen Stefani stole all the shows in a shimmering Atelier Versace number with edgy metallic details. More recently, Lady Gaga opted for an all-black dress by the stylist, designer, and close friend of Brandon Maxwell. The asymmetrical neckline accentuates Lady Gaga’s 5-foot-1 frame and further showcases her signature sense of impressive sophistication.

At the 2018 Emmys, pink was the color of the night: Tracee Ellis Ross wowed in a Valentino Haute Couture gown, while Westworld’s Thandie Newton went for sleek minimalism in a Brandon Maxwell column dress. But whether or not they took home a statue, these women’s fashion choices made them part of the winners’ circle. Last year, notable moments included Kendall Jenner’s Richard Quinn floral dress, which was offset by a Vex Clothing rubber bra worn underneath. Gwyneth Paltrow also proves that vintage style can feel as fresh as right on the runway, presenting an ultra-chic Valentino storied piece.

For last year’s Emmys, the stars didn’t skimp on fashion. The highlight was Zendaya in an Armani Privé polka dot gown, which she wore when she accepted the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, for her role in Euphoria. A winning dress for the big winner of the night.
